Airbnb and Cloudflare both cleared the bars they set for themselves on Thursday after the close — and both raised the outlook. The market rewarded them for it in after-hours trading: Airbnb rose about 11% and Cloudflare surged about 18%, reversing regular-session drops of 3.5% and 8.3% respectively.

Airbnb: fastest growth in more than three years#

Airbnb reported third-quarter revenue of $4.87 billion, up 19% year over year — its fastest revenue growth in more than three years, and above both its own August guide of $4.69–4.77 billion and the $4.75 billion consensus estimate. Diluted earnings were $3.16 a share, up 43% from $2.21 a year earlier and ahead of the $2.89 consensus. Net income rose 38% to $1.89 billion.

The rest of the print filled in the reacceleration story the company has been building toward all year:

  • Gross booking value: $27.7 billion, up 21%, ahead of the roughly $26.4 billion consensus
  • Nights and Seats Booked: 155 million, up 16%, with North America nights growing at their fastest pace in four years
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $2.5 billion, up 22%, a 52% margin — the highest quarterly adjusted EBITDA in company history

The guide did the rest of the work. For the fourth quarter, Airbnb expects revenue of $3.22–3.28 billion, growth of 16% to 18%, against a roughly $3.16 billion consensus. For the full year, it raised its outlook to revenue growth in the high teens — up from mid-teens — and an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 36%. The company also authorized a new share repurchase of up to $12 billion.

Cloudflare: best quarter ever, and the guide jumped#

Cloudflare called the third quarter its best ever. Revenue was $782.5 million, up 39% year over year — its fastest growth in nearly four years — against its own guide of $736–737 million and a roughly $737 million consensus. Non-GAAP earnings were $0.38 a share, up from $0.27 a year earlier and ahead of the roughly $0.34 consensus. On a GAAP basis, the company lost $34.1 million, or $0.10 a share, wider than the $1.3 million loss a year earlier.

Non-GAAP operating income was $137.1 million, a 17.5% margin, up from 15.3% a year ago. Current remaining performance obligations — contracted revenue expected to be recognized within twelve months — grew 37%.

The outlook moved sharply higher. For the fourth quarter, Cloudflare expects revenue of $845–846 million with non-GAAP earnings of $0.43 a share, against a roughly $796 million consensus. For the full year, it now expects revenue of $2.963–2.964 billion and non-GAAP earnings of $1.35 a share, up from its prior guide of $2.864–2.870 billion.
