ASML's Q3: record €11.7B in sales, guidance raised again — and it still can't build fast enough

The lithography giant posted record quarterly revenue, up 25% from Q2 and 55% from last year, lifted full-year guidance for the third time, and told investors its planned 2027–28 supply won't meet customer demand.

What happened#

ASML, the Dutch company whose lithography machines print the world's most advanced chips, reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 14 — and they were records across the board. Net sales hit €11.662 billion, up 25% from Q2's €9.326 billion and up 55% from €7.516 billion a year ago. Net income nearly hit €5 billion (€4.960 billion), more than doubling the €2.13 billion of Q3 2025. Basic earnings per share came in at €12.95 versus €5.49 last year.

Two details stand out in the quarter-over-quarter comparison. First, the margin story: gross margin jumped 3.5 percentage points to 57.5%, landing near the top of the company's own 55–57% guidance. ASML credits stronger-than-expected service and upgrade revenue — customers paying to squeeze more productivity out of installed machines. Second, the cash pile: up 68% in a single quarter to €12.7 billion, a war chest for the capacity buildout ahead.

On guidance, the company raised its full-year outlook for the third time this year: 2026 net sales now expected at €44–45 billion (narrowed up from €43–45 billion), with full-year gross margin around 56%. For Q4, ASML guides €14.2–15.2 billion in sales at ~57% margin — implying the fourth quarter will be bigger than the record third.

The number behind the number#

The most important line in the release isn't a financial figure — it's a capacity warning. CEO Christophe Fouquet said customers keep revising their equipment demand forecasts upward on AI expectations, that planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will fall short of demand, and that some customers are already asking about orders for 2029 and 2030. The company had already earmarked 30% capacity increases for 2027 and 2028 back in July; Fouquet now says even that may not be enough, with more 2028 capacity under study.

There is also pricing power coming. Finance chief Roger Dassen said conversations on higher prices with key customers are complete, with the effect starting to show partly in 2027 and fully from 2028 — a second growth lever beyond volume.

One honest caveat for the bull case: the top line narrowly missed analyst expectations (€11.66 billion vs. €11.71 billion consensus per Visible Alpha), and the stock's initial reaction was muted — Amsterdam shares hovered around €1,512.50 in early trading after falling 4.2% the session before. Record quarters don't always mean record reactions when expectations are already sky-high.

Our take#

ASML just confirmed its role as the toll booth on the AI highway: when chipmakers can't buy enough of its machines two years out, that's demand visibility most companies would kill for. The quarter-over-quarter acceleration — 25% sales growth, 70% profit growth, expanding margins — is the financial signature of pricing power meeting a supply-constrained market.

The risk to watch isn't demand; it's execution. Promising 2029–2030 delivery slots while warning that 2027–28 supply falls short is a high-class problem, but it concentrates everything on ASML's ability to actually build the factories and ship the tools. For investors, the question has shifted from "is AI demand real?" to "can the supply chain keep up?" — and ASML's answer, for now, is: barely.
